Week 3, Day 6

Day 6 tasks:
A note about conferences
Finish Coherence and Perception
Varied sentence structure and advanced punctuation
Journal 2
A Look ahead

1. A note about conferences: Please be sure to think ahead when scheduling reviews or conferences for your papers.

2. Finish Coherence and Perception: See Day 5.

3. Varied sentence structure and advanced punctuation: (Phrases, Clauses and Fragments) First, we'll spend some time reviewing the most common punctuation marks and talking a little about how you can use them effectively to vary your sentence structure (PowerPoint on punctuation; student handout; coordinating conjunctions practice). After you've had some practice, I'll give you some tips on how to use (not overuse) them and how to proofread your work to be sure you've used them correctly. Here is a practice activity if you'd like to give it a try! I'll give you the answers on Tuesday.

4. Journal 2: Please write your initial reaction to contract learning. This semester, you will be solely responsible for your learning. Compare and contrast this style with previous writing assignments you have done. How is it similar or different from the writing you will do for your master's or doctorate? For writing you will do in your future career? (Note that this assignment can be more of a free-write than an essay. It will be somewhat of a pre-writing experience for a more formal journal 3 assignment involving discussion writing.) Remember to post by Monday at 8am.

5. A look ahead: Next week we will discuss paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and other ways of integrating sources so that they support your ideas instead of you supporting theirs. We will also begin discussing writing dicussion sections and critical reviews (into week 8), particularly those included in major research papers. Please keep working on your contracts!
