Introduction to Discussion
1. Review homework (summary strategies): Please open the homework from last class. Trade with a partner and check the following:
- Is the first sentence constructed with all the necessary information?
- Does the summary portion maintain an unbiased voice (check reporting verbs)?
- Does the summary provide a clear idea of the original text?
- Is there a transition sentence (thesis)?
2. Discuss Critiques: Let's pick up where we left off on the ppt from last class. We'll be discussing critique strategies and revising the writing assignment that you did for today.
3. Introduction to Discussing your research: No matter what your field or topic, if you conduct research you must (at least implicitly) make a claim, back it with reasons based on evidence, seek and acknowledge the views of others and perhaps respond to them, and you must usually explain your principles of reasoning. These are some of the most important elements, therefore, of your Discussion.
Here, therefore, are the questions you need answer for your readers in your discussion:
1. What do you claim?
2. What reasons support that claim
3. What evidence supports those reasons?
4. Do you acknowledge this alternative/complication/objection, and how do you respond?
5. What principle (warrant) justifies connecting your reasons to your claim?
